Starting the New Year with Intentional Goal Setting

Starting the New Year with Intentional Goal Setting

As a newly certified biblical life coach, I am thrilled to start the new year helping others discover their God-given potential. One of the most powerful tools I've learned is the importance of setting goals that propel us forward and align with our deepest values and long-term vision. In this blog post, I want to share how you can set SMART goals that honor your faith and guide you toward a fulfilling life.

We all have dreams and aspirations, but without a clear plan, they often remain just that... dreams. When we set goals, it gives us direction, focus, and motivation. However, as people of faith, our goals must be rooted in something deeper than personal ambition. When we align our goals with our values and seek God's guidance, we tap into greater strength and motivation.

What are SMART Goals?

SMART is an acronym that stands for:

  • Specific: A specific goal is clear and well-defined. It answers the questions of who, what, where, when, and why.
  • Measurable: A measurable goal has concrete metrics for tracking progress. This allows you to stay motivated and make adjustments as needed.
  • Achievable: An achievable goal is realistic and attainable with effort and dedication. It stretches you without setting you up for failure.
  • Relevant: A relevant goal aligns with your values, long-term vision, and overall purpose. It's something that truly matters to you and contributes to your growth.
  • Time-bound: A time-bound goal has a deadline or timeframe. This creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay on track.

Aligning Goals with Your Values and Vision

Before setting any goals, take some time for reflection and prayer. Reflect on your core values and principles that guide your life. Ask yourself:

  • What are my top 3 priorities?
  • What are my God-given talents and passions?
  • How can I use my gifts to serve others and glorify God?

By aligning your goals with your values and vision, you ensure that you're not just chasing after fleeting desires but pursuing a life of purpose and meaning.

Breaking Down Large Goals

Large goals can feel overwhelming at times. This is why we break them down into smaller, manageable steps. This is especially crucial for my ADHD friends. Think of it as climbing a staircase—you wouldn't try to jump to the bottom in one leap.  Instead, you would take it one step at a time.

For example, if your goal is to "grow closer to God," you could break it down into smaller steps like:

  • Spend 15-20 minutes reading God's word and devotion before starting your day.
  • Join a Bible study group with like-minded individuals.
  • Practice gratitude daily by writing down three things you're thankful for before bed.

By breaking down large goals, you create a roadmap for success. Each small step becomes a victory, building momentum and confidence along the way.

Staying Consistent

Remember that setbacks and challenges are a normal part of the journey. Don't get discouraged if you stumble or face unexpected obstacles. Instead, turn to your faith for strength and guidance. Learn from your mistakes, adjust your course if needed, and keep moving forward with perseverance. And most importantly, give yourself grace!

Side Note: Living with ADHD has definitely taught me a lot about perseverance. Staying consistent is a constant effort for me, but I choose to not let it dictate my thoughts or hold me back from pursuing my goals. I find strength and guidance in trusting God's path for me and actively seeking opportunities for growth. My faith and reading the Bible have been a constant source of encouragement.

Surround yourself with a supportive community of friends, family, or mentors who can encourage you and hold you accountable. Celebrate your progress and acknowledge how far you've come. And most importantly, trust in God's plan for your life.

A Prayer for Guidance

Dear God,

I come to you seeking Your guidance and wisdom as I set goals for my life. Help me align my desires with your purpose and use my gifts to serve you and others. Thank you, Lord, for giving me the strength, courage, and perseverance to overcome challenges and stay consistent. May my journey be a testament to your love and grace.

Amen
